Communications & Community Engagement Coordinator
Role available: Freelance
Start Date: 2nd February 2026 (or as soon as possible after this date)
Hours: 7 hours per week
Hourly rate: £18 per hour, depending on experience
Location: Currently work from home within reasonable travel distance from Bridport (regular meetings in Bridport). Working from the Nourish Hub once established.
Flexible Working Options: Flexible working hours to be agreed

Bridport Food Matters (BFM) is a local food network, part of Sustainable Food Places, which steers the delivery of food security and promotes a sustainable local food system in Bridport and surrounding area.
Bridport Food Matters (BFM) is a Charitable Community Benefit Society (CBS) – a cooperative legal structure designed to benefit the wider community rather than just its members.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
-
To ensure that BFM communications activity supports the achievement of the overall aims of the organisation.
-
To develop and deliver communications and engagement activity for BFM audiences with a focus on key stakeholders, members, partners, collaborators and wider community public engagement.

To build and hold strategic relationships ensuring BFM communications activity reaches and impacts our defined audiences.
-
To record, measure and report on the impact of BFM communications and engagement activity.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Oversee the strategic direction of communications activity in line with overall BFM objectives (i.e. campaign objectives support BFM aims and objectives).
-
Develop, manage, and deliver a calendar of communication, content and campaigns that supports engagement and provides a consistent and compelling story of our organisation and impact.

Support communications and admin tasks related to organisational development objectives, fundraising and volunteer engagement, including donor outreach, campaign materials, and recordkeeping.

Build sustainable relationships and communicate regularly with key network partners and community organisations to ensure all BFM-owned platforms and channels are up to date and are the ‘go to’ source for information on the Bridport Good Food Movement.

Develop and manage channels, tools, and systems to ensure they meet the changing needs and requirements of BFM, including website, social media (currently Facebook, Instagram, YouTube managed in channel), email newsletters (Mailchimp), analytics (Google). Drive the use of analytics to support decision making, prioritisation and achievement of KPIs.

Manage and ensure BFM website functionality, accessibility and relevance. Oversee website development, liaise with designer, draft core content, and update and edit website content where necessary. A website rebuild is planned, with funding secured through sponsorship.

Work with the creative designer/agency to implement the new brand identity and style guidelines for BFM and Nourish.

Content coordination – create and maintain a rich pool of Bridport-specific online resources (including occasional production of Vox Pops / short films). Support the BFM Hub Manager with research and development of content.

Consult with Working Groups to ensure their work is supported and represented.

Event promotion and coordination – publicise and manage guest lists and invitations for BFM and Nourish events (Eventbrite). Work with the Hub/Programme Manager and Community Outreach Officer on event management and production.
ESSENTIAL / DESIRABLE

Familiarity with the local food environment in the Bridport area and motivation to work as part of a local team.

Experience developing communications and audience strategy; ability to interpret complex information and present it for different audiences.

Practical expertise in adapting and adopting communication channels to drive engagement with different audiences.

Experience delivering high-quality, impactful campaigns that tell an organisation’s story and drive engagement, fundraising, broader messaging and support for beneficiary audiences.

Experience delivering high-quality content and assets – from stories to visuals and copy – that meet audience needs and are inclusive and representative.

Experience with PR approaches, building media relationships, and issuing and managing press activity.

Skills and experience with WordPress/Squarespace, CMS, Mailchimp, professional and social media channels, Eventbrite, Google Workspace / Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Slack and MS Teams / Zoom.

Ability to read and interpret analytics (Google Analytics) and set analytical goals.

Understanding of accessibility standards in communications and GDPR.
